"I always wanted to be a teacher," is something Principal Cathy Barnes remembers hearing more than once as she conducted interviews over the summer.

Most of the 26 newbies had no formal educator training. They were mostly midcareer professionals looking to make a change.

Barnes offered to give them a chance, and then set up training and coaching to help them succeed, she said. It took about a month for her to realize that not all of them would.

By the winter break, Barnes had let go four of those new teachers by invoking a state law that allows new teachers to be fired without giving a reason so long as it is done within the first half of the school year.

Known as the "97-day rule" because of the stated deadline, school administrators say it allows schools to quickly part ways with teachers that simply are not equipped for the job. However, union officials say the law makes it so easy to fire new teachers that principals do that rather than spend the time and money to mold them into better educators.

The district has approximately 9,000 teachers.

This year in Duval County, 29 out of the approximately 1,000 newly minted teachers were terminated under the 97-day rule or resigned in lieu of being terminated. Many other new teachers have also left the school system this year, though other reasons were cited for their departure. One was later rehired at another school.

After their 97-day probationary period expired on Jan. 9, those teachers received the security of knowing they cannot be fired midyear without due process. But they don't have to be reappointed to their post at the end of the school year.

After three years, Florida teachers receive tenure, meaning if during the summer break a principal decides not to invite them back to a school, they must be offered other options.

The 97-day rule was created in 1997, a time when Education Commissioner Frank Brogan was introducing sweeping education reform. At the time, a group of lawmakers wanted to eliminate teacher tenure laws. Knowing that such a law would not pass, they settled for the 97-day rule instead.

Terrie Brady, president of the local teachers union, said of the 800 teachers who have left the school system this year, she feels the 97-day rule is responsible for more than 29, possibly close to 100.

She feels half a year isn't long enough to determine who will become a great teacher.

"If somebody chooses to want to go into education, why would we not give them as much support as possible and encourage them to stay and make sure they are successful?" she said.

Brady said the school system lacks the money, time and resources to devote to professional development, especially since both new and veteran teachers are already bogged down with paperwork, mandates and other things that tax their time outside of the classroom. She advocates for more mentoring and training to help new teachers adapt to the job.

She said she agrees there are teachers who should removed from the classroom, but she thinks there should always be a process in place to hear both sides of the story and determine a fair course to follow.

Veteran educator Jim Williams was a principal for over a decade before the 97-day rule was in place and about the same time after.

During that time, he said he probably used the 97-day rule only twice.

"It was always that I cannot leave this person working with students because I believe they are doing damage to students," Williams said. "Nor do I see between now and the end of the year any change."

Williams said he always considered the impact of the decision on the students, as well as the employee. Now that he supervises a cluster of principals, he expects them to provide ample evidence supporting their decision to exercise the 97-day rule. In the end, however, he agrees that teachers who are not effective in the classroom should be removed.

"We're not an employment agency; we're a teaching institution and students ought to be primary in this," he said.

Would you worship the Christian God if he appeared?

Just look around you.. An endless struggle for human rights, disease, poverty, famine, death, war, destruction, prejudice, hate, corruption, and much more.
First off, if there was a God I'd really like to think he wouldn't leave out basic rights like "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." None of us have that right. None of us have the right to food, shelter, or drinkable water either. Not the right. Real rights can't be taken away.
So if this is the best god can do, I'm not impressed. This shouldn't be on the resume of a supreme being. Or maybe, just maybe, he doesn't give a d-amn?

And here's another thing: hell. I hate to be repetitive, but what the hell?!

If I had a child and they didn't love me, I wouldn't lock them up in my closet of eternal flame to make them kick and scream and cry and burn in torture and anguish and suffering until the end of time.
Even if they committed a crime like murder, I wouldn't do that. I couldn't. I'd call the police on them, sure, but I wouldn't do sick, horrible tortures. Unlike god. That's the kind of crap you'd expect from an amoral sociopathic sadist.
I'm more moral than god. You're more moral than god.
I'd sooner worship you.
So no, I wouldn't worship such a god. I'd much rather be in hell doing pot, having gay sex, constantly be partying in a pub with rock blasting everywhere.
The God character, in the Bible gave people a choice, either praise and worship him, or suffer eternal torture and damnation. Not really a good choice, at all. This is not the morality of a compassionate creature, worthy of respect.

I don't take drugs, I don't care much for nature, I don't and never intend to go on protests, I wash myself and I'm not much of an optomist. I don't wear make-up, I never will be a vegetarian, I don't dye my hair.

But I do like the beauty in nature, I have highlights of blonde/red/purple in my hair, I have natural pale skin but not clear skin, being a quiet person living in solitude, believe in soulmates/true love, still believe magic, listen new age/spellbinding albums (Evanescene, Patricia Spero, Pia, Juliana, Llewellyn, Medwyn Goodall, Terry Oldfield, Sally Oldfield and Carollyn Hillyer), I'm a realist, love the idea of tranquility, wear beautiful medieval tunics, jeans with ribbon or sequin trimmings and tie-dye tops plus gypsy skirts in the summer. I have goth vaules: beauty can be found in sorrow and dark things in general. It's an acceptance of all aspects of life. emphasis is shifted toward the mystical and the other-worldly in creativity and art.
I know people hate labels. But I see them as compliment, a type of art in name. I'd rather have a label than be nicknamed quiet girl by people who don't know my name! Oh and for your information I'm in 20's.

Christians: Can you explain the parable of the laborers in the vineyard?

(Matthew 20:1-16)

What does Jesus mean by "many who are first who will be last; and the last, first"? (Matthew 19:30)

Does this parable have any impact on the doctrine of heavenly rewards which are bestowed upon all believers, based upon their works while in the flesh? Or are the laborers in this parable expressly those who called into the fivefold ministry? Or do the laborers represent the nations - Jew and Gentile, and the timeline of each in relation to the gospel?

To put that latter question another way: Does this tie into the Scriptures in Romans 9-11 where the Apostle Paul explains the order of salvation by nation?

(Why the Jews were chosen first, how their rejection of Christ opened the door for preaching the gospel to the Gentiles; and that all of Israel will be saved once the fullness of the Gentiles has come into the kingdom)

Adoptive parents...do you get a monthly stipend for your children?

I have recently heard that there are people out there who believe a special needs child adopted through a domestic infant adoption would receive a monthly stipend through the state. I am not aware of such a thing and I was wondering if you knew of anything. The only thing I can think of is that there is salary cap that would make some eligible and others not.

I am very curious about this as I know a single mother with an adopted son with a very low functioning form of autism and she doesn't receive any help and she sure could use it. She has been trying to get her insurance to cover the handheld computer that her son could use to type the words and the computer would speak for him...sorry, I cannot think of the name of that machine. I am lucky enough that my daughter speaks very well, but I know it would do her heart good to hear her son speak. Her health insurance will not cover it and if she could get some extra help she could buy it for him herself.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
She is very minimally above the income level to collect social security benefits for him. She is currently appealing that decision based on the severity of his condition.
Just to be perfectly clear...her and her then husband adopted him from birth through an agency, not foster care!
My daughter has been diagnosed with Aspberger's as well. When it comes to where our children fall on the autism spectrum we are certainly very lucky!
